The effects of antiethylene agents, aminooxyacetic acid (AOA) and silver thiosulfate (STS) on the fresh weight change and the vase life of cut carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L. ¢¥White Sim¢¥) were investigated. AOA and STS at 8 mM and 1 mM, respectively, minimized the loss of fresh weight and extended the vase life of cut carnation flowers by 7 to 8 days when harvested at stage II. Based upon the measurements of fresh weight change and flower quality, stage II was considered as the optimal harvest maturity of cut carnation flowers for the maximal vase life. AOA was superior to STS for the extension of the vase life of cut carnations. AOA and STS inhibited ethylene production at all concentrations used in this study, while control flowers produced ethylene at all three stages of maturity tested.
